Veterans Schedule for Rating Disabilities

Both the Department of the Army and Department of Veterans Affairs utilize this scale to rate disabilities. The Army considers only conditions the deem the soldier unfit per AR 40-501 while the VA considers all conditions deemed service connected.

Army Regulation 40-501

Standards of Medical Fitness governs

  • Medical fitness standards for enlistment, induction, and appointment, including officer procurement programs.

  • Medical fitness standards for retention and separation, including retirement.

  • Medical fitness standards for diving, Special Forces, Airborne, Ranger, free fall parachute training and duty, and certain enlisted military occupational specialties (MOS's) and officer assignments.

  • Medical standards and policies for aviation.

  • Physical profiles.

  • Medical examinations and periodic health assessments.

Army Regulation 635-40

Physical Evaluation for Retention, Retirement, or Separation establishes the Army Physical Disability Evaluation System according to the provisions of Title 10, United States Code, Chapter 61, (10 USC 61) and Department of Defense Directive (DODD) 1332.18. It sets forth policies, responsibilities, and procedures that apply in determining whether a Soldier is unfit because of physical disability to reasonably perform the duties of his or her office, grade, rank, or rating. If a Soldier is found unfit because of physical disability, this regulation provides for disposition of the Soldier according to applicable laws and regulations.

The objectives of this regulation are to:

  • Maintain an effective and fit military organization with maximum use of available manpower.

  • Provide benefits for eligible Soldiers whose military service is terminated because of a service-connected disability.

  • Provide prompt disability processing while ensuring that the rights and interests of the Government and the Soldier are protected.

Army Regulation 40-400

Patient Administration assigns responsibilities and provides guidance on patient administration in Army regional medical commands and military treatment facilities. Chapter 7 specifically deals with Military Personnel Physical Disability Processing.

Army Regulation 635-200

Active Duty Enlisted Administrative Separations sets policies, standards, and procedures to ensure the readiness and competency of the force while providing for the orderly administrative separation of soldiers for a variety of reasons. Readiness is promoted by maintaining high standards of conduct and performance.

Officer Transfers and Discharges

This regulation prescribes policies and procedures governing transfer and discharge of Army officer personnel. This regulation includes policy statements, operating tasks, rules in support of operating tasks, and sequential steps of each operating task.
